Happy Easter/KONY Refresh

Happy Easter everyone!

This weekend was a little crazy so I am going to repost something from my old blog. Do you remember hearing about something called KONY last month? Well if you’ve forgotten here is a little refresher.

Joseph Kony is a criminal in Africa who abducts children, forces them to join his army and kill people (friends and family members included.) This has been going on for over 20 years and no one has stopped him. The makers of this video have decided to make Kony “famous”. I am sure you have never heard of Joseph Kony and that is the point. By raising awareness and educating people, the idea is that this will motivate our government to act.

Now you may be thinking, how does this effect my life? And to those of you, I openly shake my head. While this world is split into different continents, countries, states and cities, it does not matter where you live. You should still understand that nobody deserves to live a life like the one these African children are forced into.

With social media, helping is as easy as pressing a button. Showing support is all you are really being asked to do. If you want to go above and beyond that, then by all means that is your choice. I have a feeling that all of the people who are against this cause did not take the 30 minutes out of their life to actually educate themselves about it.

Our generation is the only generation that has not had to overcome something significant. Not even overcome, we just have not done anything. We believe we are entitled and to those people who do not have the opportunities that we have, oh well. In my opinion, that’s unacceptable. People have fought and died for us to have these opportunities and we need to continue the fight. If you sit in history class and are irritated by how long it took for us to get involved in issues in the past (Hitler, Civil Rights, Women’s Rights) then don’t be a by-stander today.

Let’s be the generation that used social media to bring down the most dangerous criminal in the world. Let’s say we did something.

Just because it is no longer viral, that doesn’t mean it is no longer an issue. Don’t let this slip through the cracks.

Faiz & Image New Song

Faiz & Image are two rappers from Howard County Maryland. We’ve all seen the wannabees and the people who should never try to rap again, but these two are unique. They have a different sound and don’t let anything get in their way. Their last mixtape was Next to Blow and since then they have come out with a couple music videos and have dropped some new songs. Their next mixtape Should Be Signed is coming soon and they have some shows lined up. Look out for this duo to do great things and listen to their newest song Dreams Money Can Buy here and check out their last mixtape here.

We Are UMD

Recently a University of Maryland student, Scott Block, created the site We Are UMD. When you sign up you add a photo of yourself, put your major and what your skills are. If this site can generate enough attention from students it will be a great resource for potential employers who are looking to hire Maryland students. It is a short sign up process and who knows you could end up being offered a job or an internship! Check it out!

Shows That if You’re Not Already Watching..Hop on the Bandwagon

Sometimes being a TV junkie can get a little overwhelming, but there are some shows that are just must-sees.

Modern Family:

I would go as far to say that Modern Family is one of, if not the funniest show on television to date. Every one of the character’s has their own persona that makes you love them. It is the perfect show to watch with your family after dinner or grab a couple friends, sit back and laugh non-stop for 30 minutes.

Smash:

Smash is a new show on NBC featuring Katherine McPhee, past American Idol participant. There isn’t anything quite like it on TV right now and you never know exactly where they are going to take it next. It is not a show about happy endings and fairy tales which is a nice break from the norm. McPhee is not the lead in the show, but instead she is the understudy. Can’t wait to find out what they are going to throw at us next!

Once Upon A Time:

Remember all of your favorite fairy tale characters? Well now they’re all in one show. Once Upon A Time, reminds you of the stories you were told as a child but puts a little twist on it. By no means is this a show for children. It keeps you on your toes with suspense and sucks you into the two juxtaposed worlds. The plot is unpredictable and keeps you coming back each week.

Men’s Spring/Summer Trends

A little something for the men.

According to fashionbeans.com, colored shoes are trending for men this spring and summer. Everyone loves their Sperry’s but this season you can spice it up with some color.

From jcrew.com men’s highlight reel, you can pair your favorite plaid button up with a bright colored sweater.

Another trend from fashionbean.com, is the safari jacket. It’s a simple jacket to throw over a sweater or a button up and turn a preppy outfit more urban.

Keeping on with the fashionbeans.com theme, COLOR COLOR COLOR remains the trend.  You can’t go wrong topping off your outfit with a bright color jacket, shirt, tie, shoes or anything you come up with.
